Is Your Job Safe?

It’s been a tough week in tech. Twitter, Meta, Stripe, Lyft, Salesforce and a host of other companies have laid off double-digit percentages of their workforce. Meanwhile more companies are also proposing layoffs and recruitment freezes / slowdowns.

If you would have told me 18 months ago that this was on the horizon, I would have thought that you were mad. Demand for tech professionals was increasing, not decreasing. Companies were struggling to hire and competition for talent was fierce.

So how can things change so dramatically in such a short space of time?

Each company will have its own story but Covid is the principal factor for most. The outbreak forced the whole world to quickly move online so demand on tech increased and companies made significant increases in investment in this area.

In hindsight, it would be easy to say that they over-invested and over-hired but how were they to know? The future was uncertain and it looked more like a world that was going to exist predominantly on the web.

However, that has not happened and online commerce has returned to prior trends and digital subscriptions etc. are dropping off.

So what does that mean for the likes of you and me?

There will certainly be more competition for jobs and this will shift the balance in favor of the employer. Let’s face it, it’s been a developers market for a long time and tech salaries have increased more than most other sectors.

If you are searching for a job today, you will likely need to make more applications than you would have this time last year and the recruitment process will be more rigorous because there is more competition out there.

I’ll not lie…in the short-term, things are going to be tough but you know what?

This. Will. Not. Last.

These are exceptional circumstances and companies have to adjust to them in order to survive but, at the end of the day, they still all want the same thing, and that is to get back to ‘normal’ and continue to grow.

As individuals, we have to do the same thing. Those that continue to upskill, set goals, and hold themselves to account will come out of this the strongest. Keep thinking long-term.

We’ve got this.
